3000th Mural in Philadelphia Dedicated

Philadelphia leads the country in the number of puplic murals that adorn walls throughout the City. A ceremony was held on June 14, 2009 to dedicate the 3000th mural produced under the direction of the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, http://www.muralarts.org. The mural located at 39th and Chestnut Sts honors the contributions and accomplishments of the Tuskegee Airmen, http://www.tuskegeeairmen.org.

Jane Golden addresses the gatheringJane Golden, Executive Director of the Mural Arts Program opened the program. The Mural Arts program, begun as an anti-grafitti effort, is now celebrating its 25th year.

Mural artist, Marcus Akinlana, was recruited by the Mural Arts Program to come to Philadelphia in the summer of 2008 to create the mural. Akinlana interviewed the Airmen so that the mural would be authentic.Artist Marcus Akinlana Discusses the Mural

Akinlana introduced students from the Mural Arts Program who contributed to the mural. Akinlana Introduces the student artists The students created the sculptures which are part of the mural.
