Mt Airy Real Estate Agent Takes Philadelphia Neighborhood Tour

April 5, 2010

Neighborhood events abound in Philadelphia,

and a warm spring day on a holiday weekend, provided me with the opportunity to take part. From my Mt Airy home it was a short trip through the Wissahickon and Fairmount Park via Lincoln and Kelly Drives to an event at

the historic Eastern State Penitentiary which looms over Fairmount Ave.

7000 ceramics educators  were in town for a NCECA convention, and galleries, including The Neighborhood Potters, located across the street from ESP were displaying local potters’ work. Special events were scheduled, including the ESP Performance by a California potter, Rocky Lewycky.

Rocky Lewycky created 980 ceramic urns, representing the cells in the prison, all individually numbered and all having gold leaf gilded on the backside.

Participants wait with Guides at Cell Block 10

Each participant had a guide who led them through the long prision Cell Block 10, past stacks of urns.  Each person was allowed to select the urn of their choice to take home, but with no turning back to a previous stack, or time for contemplation – an intrieging task.

From Fairmount it was a quick drive across Girard Ave to 2nd St in Northern Liberties to visit the Piazza at Schmidt’s. This newly installed court yard offered the Phillies game on a giant screen, Farmer’s Market, and out-door dining. On such a lovely day there were many people strolling through, several with newly coiffed pooches who had just come from the upscale pet store and groomers.
